Five Rare Okavango Delta Lodges
There are safari lodges everyone knows.
Then there are the places that quietly earn a place in travellers' memories for the rest of their lives.

When people begin researching Botswana, the same names appear time and again. They are exceptional properties and rightly deserve their reputation.
Yet some of the Delta's most remarkable experiences happen elsewhere.
Hidden amongst permanent waterways, remote islands and ancient floodplains are a handful of intimate camps that receive surprisingly little attention outside the safari world. They are not hidden because they lack quality. Quite the opposite. Many simply choose to remain understated, relying on returning guests and trusted travel advisors rather than extensive marketing.
At Travel African Time, we spend countless hours researching properties, speaking with lodge partners and evaluating experiences that genuinely deliver something different. These are five Okavango Delta lodges we believe deserve far more recognition than they receive.
If you're searching for a safari that feels authentic, exclusive and wonderfully removed from the ordinary, start here.

1. Kanana -
The Delta at Its Most Authentic
There is something wonderfully timeless about Kanana.
Set within a private concession on the south-western edge of the Okavango Delta, the camp moves between permanent waterways, seasonal floodplains and open grasslands — a diversity that makes this one of Botswana's richest wildlife regions.
Morning game drives often reveal lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo, while afternoons unfold more slowly, gliding through lily-covered channels aboard a traditional mokoro.
One of Kanana's great privileges is private access to a heronry that comes alive with thousands of nesting birds during breeding season — a spectacle very few visitors to Botswana ever witness.
The atmosphere here stays relaxed rather than extravagant. Luxury comes from space, exceptional guiding, and the feeling of having found somewhere wonderfully genuine.
From: US $770 per person per night (low season) – US$1,770(peak, June–October)
Best for the heronry: July through December
Perfect for: First-time Botswana visitors wanting a complete Delta experience.

2. Little Tubu -
Romance Without the Crowds
Some lodges are built for wildlife. Others are built for the moments shared between two people.
Little Tubu does both, effortlessly.
With just three tents on Hunda Island, the camp feels private from the moment you arrive. Days begin with coffee as elephants wander past camp, before venturing out to track predators, wild dogs and plains game. Evenings end beneath impossibly clear skies beside a fire.
The pace here encourages couples to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with each other — which is exactly why it's one of the quiet favourites for honeymoons and anniversaries in the Delta.
From: US $1,600 per person per night, rising to US $3,100 in peak flood season (June–September)
Best time to visit: May–September, when the floodplains fill and water activities open up alongside game drives
Perfect for: Honeymoons, anniversaries and couples seeking privacy.

3. Xugana Island Lodge -
Where Water Becomes the Safari
Many visitors picture Botswana as endless game drives. Xugana offers something else entirely.
Set on one of the Delta's largest permanent lagoons, the experience here revolves around water, year-round. Glide through narrow, reed-lined channels by mokoro, drift across crystal-clear lagoons by motorboat, and watch elephants cross between islands while fish eagles call overhead.
Wildlife remains excellent, but the real luxury is the pace — slowing down enough to experience the Delta from a perspective few destinations in Africa can offer.
From: US $740 per person per night (January–March) – US $1,410 (May–October)
Note: No game drives here — activities are water and walking-based, which suits travellers who want something more contemplative
Perfect for: Travellers wanting the classic water safari experience.

4. Meno a Kwena -
Botswana's Best View You Probably Haven't Seen
Technically, Meno a Kwena sits beyond the traditional Delta. That's exactly what makes it special.
Perched above the Boteti River, the camp overlooks one of Botswana's most remarkable wildlife corridors. Through the dry season, thousands of zebra, elephant and antelope gather below to drink — extraordinary viewing, directly from camp, no vehicle required.
Few places in Africa let you watch this unfold over breakfast.
Combined with cultural experiences in neighbouring villages and easy access to the Makgadikgadi region, Meno a Kwena offers a safari that feels refreshingly different from the traditional Delta circuit — this is Botswana beyond the obvious.
From: US $625 per person per night (January–March) – US $1,275 (peak dry season, July–August)
Best time to visit: April–October, when the Boteti becomes the only water for miles and draws the zebra migration to its banks
Perfect for: Repeat safari travellers looking for something unique.

5. Nxamaseri Island Lodge -
The Okavango's Quietest Secret
Some travellers measure luxury by thread count. Others measure it by silence.
Deep in the permanent waters of the Panhandle, Nxamaseri is one of those rare places where the modern world simply disappears. Boat safaris replace busy roads. Birdsong replaces background noise. Sunsets become an event in themselves.
The surrounding waterways are known for exceptional birdlife, some of the country's best fly-fishing, and boating excursions that show a gentler, quieter side of Botswana than the Delta of dramatic river crossings and large safari vehicles.
It's not what most people picture when they think "safari." For many of our travellers, that's exactly what makes it so memorable.
From: US $740 per person per night (January–March) – US $1,410 (May–October)
Best time to visit: March–December for fishing (the Barbel Run peaks August–November); year-round for birding
Perfect for: Nature lovers, photographers, anglers and returning safari enthusiasts.
Which Lodge Is Right for You?
Every traveller imagines their perfect safari differently. Some dream of exceptional predator sightings. Others picture uninterrupted silence, an intimate camp, or gliding through papyrus-lined water in a mokoro.
There's no single "best" lodge in Botswana — only the one that matches how you want to experience it.
That's where thoughtful planning makes the difference. At Travel African Time, we don't simply book accommodation — we design journeys around how you want to feel, combining extraordinary properties, seamless logistics, and honest, independent advice built on relationships we've spent years earning.
