The best times to visit
SEYCHELLES
Shoulder seasons (April-May and October-November): These are generally considered the best times to visit the Seychelles. You'll experience calm seas with little wind, comfortable temperatures averaging around 24-30°C (75-86°F), and less rain compared to other times of the year. This makes it ideal for enjoying all the outdoor activities the Seychelles has to offer, such as swimming, snorkeling, diving, sailing, and hiking.
Dry season (May-September): This is the peak tourist season in the Seychelles, with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. However, it's also the windiest time of year, with strong southeast trade winds that can affect sea conditions and make some water activities less enjoyable. If you're a surfer or kitesurfer, however, this wind might be ideal for you! Prices for flights and resorts will also be at their highest during this time.
Wet season (December-March): The wet season is the hottest and most humid time of year in the Seychelles. While there can be heavy downpours, they are usually short-lived and followed by sunshine. This is the least crowded and most affordable time to visit, and it coincides with the turtle hatching season (January-March) which can be a magical experience. However, the visibility for diving and snorkeling can be lower due to the increased rainfall.
MAURITIUS
Shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October): These shoulder seasons offer a good balance of weather, crowds, and affordability. The weather is pleasant and sunny, with average temperatures ranging from 24°C to 27°C. There's less rain compared to the summer months, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, and exploring the island.
Summer (November-April): This is the peak tourist season in Mauritius, coinciding with the hot and humid summer months. It's perfect for those who love warm weather and don't mind crowds. You can expect plenty of sunshine and scorching temperatures, averaging around 28°C to 30°C. This is also the best time for scuba diving and deep-sea fishing due to calmer seas. However, keep in mind that this is also the cyclone season (January to March), though Mauritius is small enough that cyclones rarely make direct landfall.
Winter (May-September): Winter in Mauritius is mild with pleasant temperatures, ranging from 19°C to 24°C. This is a great time to visit if you prefer cooler weather and fewer crowds. The trade winds pick up during this time, making the east coast less ideal for swimming and offering perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing on the north and west coasts.
RÉUNION
Dry Season (May-October): This is generally considered the best time to visit Réunion for most travellers. You'll experience pleasant sunny weather with cool temperatures averaging around 20-25°C. It's perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, sightseeing, and exploring the island's waterfalls. This coincides with the whale watching season (June to October), so you might be lucky enough to spot these majestic creatures off the coast.
Wet Season (November-April): The wet season is hotter and more humid than the dry season, with temperatures averaging around 27°C. There's a higher chance of rain showers and even cyclones (January to March), although cyclones rarely make direct landfall on the island. This is the least crowded time to visit. The lush vegetation is at its most vibrant during this time, and waterfalls are cascading at their fullest. However, the increased rainfall can make hiking trails muddy and affect visibility for diving and snorkelling.
MALDIVES
Dry season (December to April): This is the peak tourist season in the Maldives, and for good reason. The weather is sunny and dry, with little rain. This is the best time to visit if you want guaranteed good weather for lounging on the beach and enjoying water activities.
Shoulder seasons (May, November): These shoulder months offer a good balance of weather and crowds. You may experience some occasional rain showers, but there will still be plenty of sunshine.
Wet season (June to October): The wet season is the least crowded time to visit the Maldives. However, you can expect more rain showers and thunderstorms, which can sometimes disrupt outdoor activities. The weather is still warm and humid, and the water visibility for diving and snorkelling can be reduced. However, this is the prime time to see manta rays and whale sharks, which come to the Maldives to feed on the plankton blooms that occur during this time.
